The rich blue hue of Japanese indigo has been cherished for generations. A natural, plant-derived dye that dates way back to around the 6th century, it nevertheless maintains its strong sense of modernity through that most ubiquitous of street wear: denim. Cole Haan is showcasing indigo’s beautiful blend of tradition, process and culture in a limited-edition version of a shoe that’s simply perfect for the task: The GrandPrø. This truly unique indigo pattern was developed by Kittaka Brothers & Co., a family-owned, family-run, fifth-generation mill founded in 1920 in Japan, using traditional techniques and natural resources. The process involves loosely tying the yarns instead of binding them tightly, and letting the indigo dye bleed into the yarns—resulting in a beautiful gradient pattern reminiscent of falling water. Hence the name Takigasuri, meaning “waterfall.”
